How to Choose a Private Label Filament Manufacturer

When you sell filament under your own brand, every spool carries your name, not the factory's. Choosing the manufacturer behind it is the biggest decision in the project. These are the questions we would ask if we were in your seat.

Takeaways

  • Buy from the factory that runs the extrusion lines, not from a reseller of someone else's stock.
  • Ask for the minimums in writing: at NOVTAU, 500 spools for private label, all colors combined, and 200 spools per custom color.
  • Approve a printed sample of your own packaging before production starts.
  • Check that the supplier keeps your approved colors and artwork on file, so a reorder is one message.

Make sure you are talking to the factory

Many filament sellers do not extrude anything. They buy finished spools and relabel them, which adds a margin and a step between you and the line that makes your product. When a color drifts or a batch prints differently, a reseller has to ask someone else what happened.

Ask the supplier where the filament is made, how many lines they run and what they produce in a month. NOVTAU has made filament on its own lines since 2020: a 10,000+ m² factory with 70+ production lines and 600+ tonnes of output a month. Ask for photos or a video call from the production floor; a real manufacturer can show you the extruders, the cooling tanks and the winding line.

Get the minimums and lead times in writing

Private label minimums vary a lot between suppliers, and the details matter more than the headline number. Ask whether the minimum applies per color or to the whole order, and whether it changes for custom colors.

At NOVTAU a private label order starts at 500 spools, and the colors in it count together, so 500 spools can be ten colors of 50. A custom color starts at 200 spools per color, with no color matching fee. Private label and custom orders ship in 15–30 business days. If you want to start smaller, our standard stock spools start at 100, mixed colors and materials, and ship in 3–7 business days.

Check how colors are matched and held

Your customers will reorder a color they like and expect it to look the same. Ask how the supplier matches a new color (from a Pantone code or a physical sample), how they approve it with you, and how they keep later batches consistent.

A good process looks like this: you send the reference, the factory makes a color sample, you approve it, and the approved color is recorded and used as the reference for every later batch. Ask what happens if a batch does not match the approved sample, and get the answer before you place the order.

Look at every part of the packaging

Private label is more than a sticker on a box. List the parts you want branded and ask which ones the supplier can make:

  • Spool. We offer black, white and clear plastic spools and a cardboard spool.
  • Retail box. A full-print box, a white box with your logo label, or a kraft box with a label, sized for one, two or four spools.
  • Vacuum bag. Every spool is vacuum-sealed with desiccant; the bag can carry your logo sticker.
  • Labels and cartons. Round stickers for the spool, label rolls, barcode sheets and carton marks for your warehouse.

Ask for the box sizes and the outer carton count before you plan shipping. Our standard export carton holds 10 spools and measures 35 × 24 × 43 cm.

Approve a sample of your own product

Do not launch from a catalog photo. Order samples of the exact grades and colors you will sell and print them on the machines your customers use. Then approve a printed sample of your packaging so you can see the colors, the label position and the box finish in your hand.

Our OEM process follows the same order: artwork, sample, confirmation, production, shipment. Samples are charged and the buyer pays freight, and the sample fee is credited against your bulk order.

Ask what documents come with the filament

Marketplaces and distributors often ask for documents before they list a new brand. Ask the supplier which test reports they hold, which lab issued them and which material was tested. For PLA, NOVTAU publishes RoHS, REACH SVHC and MSDS reports from Soar Testing Certification (Guangdong), which you can download from our technical documents page. For other grades, ask for the TDS, SDS or COA you need, naming the grade.

Plan the reorder before the first order

The first order is the easy one. What decides whether a private label line works is how simple the second and third orders are. Ask whether your approved colors, packaging and artwork are kept on file, how a reorder is placed and how long it takes, and whether each batch can be traced.

At NOVTAU a reorder needs one message with your quantities. While your branded stock is in production, our stock filament can ship in 3–7 business days to cover the gap. We reply to every inquiry within 4 business hours.

Your checklist

  • Who extrudes the filament, and can I see the line?
  • What is the private label minimum, and do colors count together?
  • What is the custom color minimum, and is there a matching fee?
  • Which spools, boxes, bags and labels can carry my brand?
  • Can I approve a printed packaging sample before production?
  • Which test reports exist, and for which material?
  • How are approved colors and artwork kept for reorders?

If you want to talk through your range, send us the materials, colors and packaging you have in mind and we will reply with a plan and a quote. Request a quote or see our private label service.
