Wholesale PLA Filament: What to Check Before You Buy in Bulk

Choose the PLA grades first

"PLA" covers a family of products that print and sell differently. Before you ask for prices, decide which of these you need:

• Basic PLA. The everyday grade in core colors. It is the volume seller for most resellers and print farms.
• Matte PLA. A low-sheen surface that hides layer lines, popular for models and prototypes.
• Silk and effect PLA. Silk, marble, wood, glow, sparkle, galaxy, gradient and color-change grades sell to hobby buyers at a higher price.
• Tough PLA. A tougher grade for parts that need to take more handling than basic PLA.

A useful first bulk order is weighted toward basic PLA in black, white and gray, with smaller quantities of one or two specialty grades to test demand.

Ask for the diameter tolerance

Diameter consistency is the most common cause of complaints about cheap filament. If the diameter wanders, the printer pushes more or less plastic than the slicer expects, and prints show gaps, blobs or clogs.

Ask the supplier for the tolerance in writing and how it is measured. Our 1.75 mm filament is held to ±0.02 mm, measured in line during extrusion. When a delivery arrives, check a few spools yourself with calipers at several points along the strand; our guide to incoming inspection explains how.

Check how the spools are packed

PLA absorbs moisture from the air. Wet PLA prints with stringing, bubbles and a rough surface, and it can turn brittle on the spool. For stock that may sit in a warehouse for weeks, packaging matters as much as the filament.

Ask whether every spool is vacuum-sealed with desiccant, not just bagged. Ask for the spool size and the box and carton sizes so you can plan shelf space. Our standard spool is 1 kg, vacuum-sealed with desiccant in a kraft inner box, 10 spools to an export carton of 35 × 24 × 43 cm.

Understand minimums and lead times

Bulk pricing usually comes with a minimum order. Ask whether the minimum is per color or per order, and whether you can mix grades.

At NOVTAU a stock order starts at 100 spools, and you can mix colors and materials inside that 100. Stock orders ship in 3–7 business days. If you want PLA in your own branded packaging, private label starts at 500 spools with all colors combined, and ships in 15–30 business days. A custom PLA color starts at 200 spools per color.

Test samples on your own printers

Before committing to a bulk order, print the exact grades and colors you plan to buy on the printers you or your customers use. Print the same test part with each sample so the results are comparable, and keep the spools for reference when the bulk order arrives.

Our samples are charged and the buyer pays freight. The sample fee is credited against your bulk order.

Ask for test reports

Retailers and distributors increasingly ask for material documents before they list a product. For PLA, NOVTAU holds RoHS, REACH SVHC and MSDS reports issued by Soar Testing Certification (Guangdong) in May 2026. The RoHS and REACH tests passed, and the MSDS classifies the material as not hazardous under EC 1272/2008 and GHS. You can download all three from our technical documents page.

Compare quotes on the same basis

When you compare suppliers, put the quotes side by side on the same terms:

• The same grades, colors and spool weight.
• The same packaging: vacuum-sealed with desiccant, the same box and carton.
• The same trade term, such as EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP, to the same destination.
• The same lead time and payment terms.
