CASE STUDY

How Kestrel Motion cut first-print support tickets with NOVTAU starter filament

A Canadian printer maker cut filament-related first-week support tickets by about 40% with a tested starter spool.

  • 6,000spools in the first order
  • ~2,000spools a month, matched to assembly
  • ~40%fewer filament-related first-week tickets

What they bought

Supplying the starter spool packed in every printer box

Kestrel Motion buys 1.75 mm PLA Matte in black, white, gray and sky blue as the starter spool for its printers. The first order was 6,000 spools; NOVTAU now ships around 2,000 spools a month, scheduled to the printer assembly plan. Each spool is vacuum-sealed with desiccant and packed to fit the accessory compartment of the printer carton.

The challenge

The previous starter filament varied in diameter from lot to lot. New owners often had their first print fail on the default profile, and the support team traced a large share of first-week tickets back to the bundled spool. Deliveries also came in large, irregular batches, so the assembly line either waited for filament or stored months of stock.

How NOVTAU helped

Before the first order, NOVTAU tested sample spools on Kestrel Motion's own printers with the factory default profile. Production is held to ±0.02 mm on 1.75 mm filament, and every lot is checked against the same profile before shipping. Deliveries are split into monthly lots that follow the assembly schedule.

Result

After nine months, filament-related first-week support tickets have fallen by about 40%. The assembly line has not paused for filament since the switch, and Kestrel Motion has added a PETG starter spool for its new professional model.

“Our customers judge the printer on the first print. With the starter spool behaving the same in every box, the default profile just works and our support team spends its time on real questions.”
