CASE STUDY

How Studio Maren matched client color intent in its prototype models

A Dutch design studio stopped painting most review models by ordering 14 matte colors in small mixed lots.

  • 1–2 dayssaved per client review

What they bought

Presentation models and fit prototypes in the client's intended colors

Studio Maren buys 1.75 mm PLA Matte in 14 colors, mostly neutral and earth tones such as bone white, desert tan, latte brown and nardo gray. A typical order is 100 to 150 spools mixed across colors, with no per-color minimum.

The challenge

Presentation models often missed the color direction agreed with clients, so they had to be sanded and painted before every review. Other suppliers sold matte filament only in large minimums per color, which made a wide palette expensive for a small studio to keep on hand.

How NOVTAU helped

The studio ordered sample spools across the PLA Matte range and printed its own color chips, so designers pick filament colors during color and material planning from chips made in the same material as the spools. NOVTAU accepts its orders as mixed lots with no minimum per color, and repeat orders keep the same color references, so a model printed for a second review matches the first.

Result

Over one year, Studio Maren has placed seven repeat orders and now paints only a small share of its presentation models. Designers estimate they save one to two days per client review that used to go into post-processing.

“We used to print, sand, and paint every review model. Now we choose the color from our chip set, print it in that color, and put it straight on the client's table.”
